In the SCA, "Signers" refers to ALL people within the SCA that sign including Deaf SCAdians & Deaf newcomers, individuals offering volunteer signing services (Sign Heralds, Voices of the Populace), professional interpreters (who may or may not volunteer Signing Services in the Society), audiologists, teachers of the Deaf, family members (CODA etc), conversationally fluent members of our Populace, and SCAdians who are brand new to signing!
There are many signed languages within the Known World (SCA-term for the 20 kingdoms that span across North America, Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia and Africa). Since Pennsic takes place within English-speaking North America, the majority of Signers at Pennsic will be using American Sign Language (ASL), though there may be a few Australian Sign Language (Auslan) users from the Kingdom of Lochac (Australia and New Zealand) as well as users of La Langue des Signes Québécoise (LSQ) from the northern region of the East Kingdom (Canada). See a detailed map of the Known World here.

"Pennsic Welcome Home" refers to the feeling of returning to the Pennsic War, an annual Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) event held at Cooper's Lake Campground in Pennsylvania. It signifies the strong sense of community and belonging that many participants experience upon arriving at the event, which is often referred to as "home" by its attendees, according to the Pennsic Independent. This sentiment is particularly strong for those who have been attending for many years.
The formal Pennsic 53 Event Guide is typically released shortly before the event begins, but partial and real-time schedules are updated on the Pennsic War News page.
Schedules for specific courts, martial activities, and university classes follow these key updates:
Martial Activities: Scheduling deadlines for battlefield and tournament organizers concluded in late May before Pennsic. Direct inquiries and developing field timetables are managed via Battlefield Scheduling or Armored Tournaments. The most current and complete Pennsic martial schedules (including Rapier, Armored Combat, Archery, and Youth Combat) are primarily distributed on-site at the Marshals' Point, individual lists, and the official Pennsic War THING.
University Classes: Class and event registration details can be tracked on the Pennsic University THING portal.
General Event Guide: Keep an eye on the official Pennsic War Home page for the digital version of the Event Guide as July approaches.
More SCAdians are on Facebook than any other social media platform (with Discord coming in second place). The second best way to find Pennsic activities and get responses based on your interests is to search Pennsic Groups on Facebook and scroll to find what interests you. The best way to find Pennsic activities is to search through the Pennsic Event Guide on the Pennsic Website.
The Pennsic Map: outlines the camping blocks, roads, and key event locations at Cooper's Lake Campground in Slippery Rock, PA. To locate specific camping groups, view block layouts, and see the official layout of the war grounds, use the interactive Pennsic Map Block Finder (clickable version HERE) or browse the PDF layouts in the Pennsic War Land Office.
There are several shopkeepers and support staff who have agreed to be listed under the sign-language-friendly stores to check out at Pennsic. Some of these individuals are newer Signers and some are conversational Signers. There are not yet any Deaf-owned shops at Pennsic, though that will change over time as more Deaf individuals join the Society! Many merchants who do not sign are also ready to communicate with pen and paper as needed for inclusivity.
Sign-Friendly Shops at Pennsic:
Black Mountain (seek the owner of the shop)
Claybaby Pottery (look for Mandie Franks)
Silvertree Souq (family members of store owners sign)
Traders of Tamerlane (look for Lorelai or Gabo)
White Wolf & Phoenix (look for Katheryne Maeder)
If you are looking shops that offer sign-related sign-related items (SCA name signs or volunteer Sign Herald wear), click here. Shops that are usually present at Pennsic are listed as such on the page, otherwise purchases online are available.
What's Midnight Madness? It's a magical and exciting atmosphere for families and friends! Some shops start their discounts as early as 6 PM, and some discounts even continue through the rest of war.
"These somewhat naïve vignettes from a manuscript of circa 1150 show numerical gestures from one of the so-called monastic sign languages. Developed for communication between monks when silence was required, they are well documented in medieval Benedictine monasteries throughout Western Europe. Some are even still in use to this day. MS Wien 12600 (Vienna, Austrian National Library, Cod. 12600, fol. 22v-23r). Source: The Warburg Institute Iconographic Database." - text from this source.

The Society of Creative Anachronism is a volunteer-based organization. This pertains to both skillset and availability of volunteers.
Skillset
For Individuals SEEKING Sign Language Services:
Volunteer Signers are usually either Sign Heralds from the College of Heralds or Emissaries from the Voices of the Populace, the two volunteer groups in the SCA that offer Signing Services. Sign Heralds are presently the oldest, and as a result, the largest and most well-known group of Volunteer Signers. Voices of the Populace originates from the West Kingdom and is starting to grow in other kingdoms. There are also Volunteer Signers who are not members of either group who come to Pennsic (and may attend one other event throughout the year closer to home) but do not consider themselves active enough to be true SCAdians (members of the SCA). The Sign Heralds are still working to stay in the loop with these individuals offering their services.
The Sign Heralds are working on a ranking system for language fluency within the Society. While definitions for these ranks are presently being written, newer Volunteer Signers can still offer services at Court expressing words from one language into the other (English into ASL or vice versa), like signing which award is being given and for what feat/accomplishment.
When reaching out to a Volunteer Signer for services, do include what you would like their services for. This way, if there is a more qualified person volunteering Signing Services (for example, a volunteer with more personal experience in Arabic calligraphy, Sikh Martial Arts, or Punjabi Language Basics would have an easier time signing for those classes than a volunteer who does not have that experience), the volunteers can coordinate with each other to work toward having have your needs better met.
Availability
The volunteers that chose to be listed on this site may not be available at a moment's notice (Pennsic is HUGE and BUSY!). However, they may better be able to work in requests in to their Pennsic schedule if they are contacted ahead of time. For example, if a fighter is planning on fighting on a Tuesday but was made aware that signing services was requested for Tuesday afternoon, they can choose to leave the battlefield early to head toward the source of the request. If a volunteer listed here is already occupied with or scheduled for another activity (teaching, learning, fighting, camp care, etc), they may be able to help you coordinate with another volunteer to send someone your way.
Are you interested in volunteering? We're always looking for more Volunteer Signers!

Like all hobby communities, the Society for Creative Anachronism is full of jargon that wouldn't be found outside of this community (we're building a whole dictionary for it on this very site!). Or, sometimes, a word's meaning within the community is different than its meaning outside of the community.
This New to Court Sign Brochure, English PDF - from Nicasia Leontodes is commonly handed out by Sign Heralds at Court to d/Deaf visitors and newcomers to help fill them in on the standardized Deaf SCAdian created signs and the SCA definitions of their English terms.
This list includes definitions of SCA terms for newcomers, SCA-created signs for newcomers that use sign language, and links to videos for those learning sign language to better communicate with current and prospective Deaf members.

**NOTE: (fs) indicates something is fingerspelled.
Court, signed as AWARD+CELEBRATION - refers to an official, formal gathering presided over by the Crown (or their representatives). It's a ceremonial space where official proclamations, awards, and other business are conducted.
You may hear SCAdians approach Their Majesties to "beg a boon," a medieval-sounding phrase to formal request a favour or honour for someone whom the speaker wishes to have recognized for their accomplishments. May be signed as BEG, REQUEST, HEED, or simply ASK.
You may see a SCAdian receive a "buffet," or a "blow," meaning a SMACK or a HIT (though not a full-blown punch). This is typically a smack to the face by an open hand from Their Majesty (though this may change depending on Kingdom practices for an Elevation into an Order, as not all Orders welcome new members with a buffet, and some kingdoms practice a buffet for one Order while another may not - See Elevation and Peerage below). This is a ceremonial act that represents the candidate's trust in the Crown as well as their willingness to accept this as the final "blow" they receive that goes unanswered, meaning that from now on, this individual must always have a response to meet their Kingdom's and Society's needs within their specialty.
The Dream, signed as VISION - refers to a romanticized vision of the Middle Ages, often as a place where chivalry, honour, and grace are idealized and actively practiced. See Raiya Corsiglia's video SCA - THE DREAM here (no closed captions needed), featuring friends from the Kingdom of Caid.
Elevation, signed as ADVANCE - refers to the formal ceremony where a Member is raised to a higher rank, particularly a Peerage, signifying recognition of their achievements and service to their Kingdom and The Society. Prior to the ceremony of Elevation at Court, an individual may sit Vigil (see Vigil below) if they have been asked to consider joining a Peerage Order.
Known World, may be signed as (fs)SCA+WORLD or KNOW+WORLD - refers to the geographical expanse encompassing all the regions where the SCA has active groups or chapters, organized into kingdoms. The collective global outreach extends across the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia and Africa, all researching and re-creating pre-17th century European arts, skills, and traditions.
"No Shit, There I Was" may be signed as TRUE-BUSINESS, ME INDEX [point to spot], HAPPEN WHAT? [surprise expression] - the traditional beginning of an SCA anecdote, typically involving something epic, dangerous, funny, or all three, that happened to you at an SCA event. The following statement must be true. It has been said that one has not fully established themselves in the SCA until they are the subject of a "No shit, there I was..." story.
Peerage/Peer, signed as EQUAL - if you attend Court, you will see people joining the highest-ranking Orders called Peerages (the members being called Peers) to be recognized for exceptional mastery in a particular field and have shown commitment to the ideals of the SCA, including courtesy, chivalry, and service. It does not just recognize skill, but also character and dedication to the community. An Order, signed as CLUSTER, is a specific group of people in the SCA that recognizes performers within the fields of service, art & science, ranged weapons, rapier, armored combat, and a unique order for Kingdom-serving Consorts. A Peerage is the highest level Order within each of those fields, with the exception of the Order of the Rose. See Peerage Orders below:
Order of the Chivalry, signed as CLUSTER+CHIVALRY (SCA-created sign) - the highest honour one can receive for martial prowess in armored combat throughout the Known World. A KNIGHT, one of the members of this Order, has an SCA-created sign based on the accessories our Knights wear within the hobby, as opposed to an article of clothing historical knights may wear.
Order of the Mark, signed as CLUSTER+(fs)MARK+GOAL - the highest honour one can receive for targeted weapons forms throughout the Known World.
Order of the Pelican, signed as CLUSTER+PELICAN (SCA-created sign) - the highest honour one can receive for service throughout the Known World. Though the sign referring to the actual bird is signed as seen here, the sign for Pelican (Pelican being both the name of the Order as well as the title of a Member of this order) is based on the reserved image representing this group, being a Pelican in its Piety. This image symbolizes these SCAdians sacrificing themselves (figuratively) for the betterment of The Society through their volunteer services.
Order of the Laurel, signed as CLUSTER+LAUREL (SCA-created sign) - the highest honour one can receive for works in art and science throughout the Known World.
Order of the Rose, signed as CLUSTER+ROSE - the award/group of former Royal Consorts, recognizing their service as the reigning consort to their Kingdom. This award is recognized throughout the Known World.
Consort, may be signed as SUPPORT+PERSON or INSPIRE+PERSON - refers to an individual chosen by a competing fighter in tournaments to support them both on the field between fights and battles as well as off of the field in roles acquired through performance from battle. A reigning consort with a King or Queen that had won Crown Tournament (the battle to become the next heirs to the throne) is referred to as King/Queen Consort. Ruling titles may change to match an individual's gender expression.
Order of Defense, signed as CLUSTER+DEFEND - the highest honour one can receive for martial prowess in rapier combat throughout the Known World. A Member of this order is called a Master of Defense, signed as MOD (SCA-created sign).
Pennsic, which has a name sign created by the Deaf SCAdian community many many years ago, is signed as PENNSIC with the same motion and location of "HOME" but with a P-handshape (SCA-created sign) - a portmanteau, or a word blending the sounds/combining the meanings of two others, combining "Pennsylvania" and the "Punic Wars" reflecting the event's origins in Pennsylvania and its thematic link to the Punic Wars, a series of conflicts between Rome and Carthage. Pennsic War is the largest annual event hosted by the SCA featuring a mock war between the Kingdom of the East and the Middle Kingdom and is is hosted by the Kingdom of Aethelmearc. While traditionally a conflict between these two kingdoms, Pennsic sometimes shifts to a Purple War (PURPLE+WAR) format, meaning the East and Middle Kingdoms (the Purple Team, PURPLE+TEAM) team up against the Known World, that team being called the Coalition (COALITION) or Green Team (GREEN+TEAM).
Pennsic is an annual event held in late July/early August each year, lasting 17 days and ending on the second full weekend in August. The opening day of Pennsic can vary, starting as early as July 24th or as late as July 30th. Prior to 2007, Pennsic would fall entirely within the month of August.
A phrase you may hear or see at Pennsic, "Hail the Traveler," signed as HONOR+TRAVELER, is a shibboleth, or custom, spoken to honour and acknowledge someone who has recently died, or "transitioned," from this life to the next. Pennsic has an annual Viking Memorial Ship set sail and burn to honour and grieve our fallen friends and family within the SCA that passed over the past year.
Peace Week/War Week, signed as PEACE+WEEK/WEEK+PEACE or WAR+WEEK/WEEK+WAR - the two distinct halves of the annual Pennsic War event. Peace Week is focused on classes, social activities, and settling in. War week is the "main event," featuring battles, competitions, and tournaments that determine the victor of the war. Battles are fought in various styles including field battles, woodland battles, and castle sieges - all employing both armored and rapier combat. Additionally, archery competitions, champion battles, and special scenarios like bridge or mountain pass battles may contribute to earning war points (the team with more points wins the war).
Pennsic has historically included participants from other organizations. The most prominent non-SCA group that attends Pennsic is the Tuchux (singular Tuchuk), also known as the "bunny-fur princesses," who are known for their distinctive "Conan the Barbarian"-style role-playing. Pennsic also hosts non-SCA kingdoms, such as the Kingdom of Acre.
Pennsic Independent, signed as PENNSIC+NEWSPAPER, or PENNSIC+INDEPENDENT - the newspaper published daily during Pennsic War, covering various events, people, and the atmosphere of the war by sharing stories and photos of the SCAdians that participate at the famous annual event.
Pennsic Newcomer's Map - to help newcomers learn the colloquial names for different locations around Pennsic. For example:
The Highlands, AKA B-Blocks - the northwest area of the map closest to the main battlefield. Also home to the Knowne World Courtesans' Bacchanal, or BACHHANALIA, the 1st century Roman Fete - Roman attire sans pants required.
The BOG(fs) vs The SWAMP - the two low-lying and heavily shaded camping areas in the southest area of Pennsic. Though sometimes used interchangeably, the swamp is wetter with standing water while the Bog is slightly drier but requires tent platforms. This is the heart of Pennsic's legendary nightlife. It features dense camping, late-night drumming circles, and lively, rowdy PARTYING.
Populace, signed as PEOPLE or (fs)SCA+PEOPLE- the SCA population of a Kingdom/The Society.
SCAdian, signed as PERSON or (fs)SCA+PERSON - a person that regularly partakes in the SCA (whether or not they are paying members).
The Society, signed as (fs)SCA+SOCIETY, or (fs)SCA+COMMUNITY - short for the Society for Creative Anachronism, The Society refers to the international organization dedicated to researching and recreating the arts, skills, and culture of pre-17th century Europe. Society may also refer to all Members that participate in The Society's hobbies.
Vigil, may be signed as TIME+CONTEMPLATE or SIT+CONTEMPLATE- refers to the period of waiting and reflection where a candidate spends time in contemplation and receives counsel (and congratulations) from established Peers and friends. Usually, SCAdians will sit for one Vigil for their first Elevation into an Order, opting not to have another Vigil for any other Order they join afterward as they would already be a Peer at that time, though it is not a rule that SCAdians may only ever have one Vigil.
Writ, signed as (fs)WRIT, LETTER, or QUESTION - a formal summons from the Crown (King, Queen, non-Royal Consort) to a person they wish to recognize with a high honor, like a peerage. They "beg the question" to the person being offered the award if they would like to join the Order.
Beg a Boon (again), the formal ask for a favour from a member within an Order to the Crown to have a fellow SCAdian join their Order.
"Welcome Home," signed as WELCOME+HOME - the greeting often heard at Pennsic referring to the feeling of returning to the Pennsic War, an annual SCA event held at Cooper's Lake Campground in Pennsylvania. It signifies the strong sense of community and belonging that many participants experience upon arriving at the event, which is often referred to as "home" by its attendees, according to the Pennsic Independent. This sentiment is particularly strong for those who have been attending for many years. This sentiment is where the name sign for PENNSIC comes from.
Haven't been to Pennsic before? Some SCAdians shared parts of their Pennsic experience last year!
Last year, Lynne Fairchild created a video on A Brief History & Information on the Pennsic War (auto-generated closed captions are available).
Following Pennsic LII, Sage Elan De Janvier released a video from Pennsic LII that captured some of the aesthetics and memories of the War.
Chris from Resist the Grind on YouTube has documented several things from his Pennsic experience last year. Pennsic has an annual Viking Memorial Ship set sail and burn to honour and grieve our fallen friends and family within the SCA that passed over the past year, for which Chris documented some of the history of the practice and documented the release of the boat during Pennsic LII. You can also see his video on What to Expect at Pennsic (auto-generated closed captions are available for both linked videos).
Some SCAdians like to check in on a few things after war, no matter what kind of war we had:

Though not directly elated to sign language services, this information is being shared on the Pennsic Signing page because since there are individuals that use signing services that also use hearing aids.
Hearing Aid Clean & Checks:
Volunteers within the SCA are offering their time and skills to help fellow SCAdians stay connected and fully engaged during large multi-day events. Because small hearing aid hiccups — like a clogged wax filter or a dead battery — shouldn't cut your vacation short or leave you sitting on the sidelines.
Being unable to hear well at an event can be genuinely isolating. Kingdom Court, bardic circles, university classes, and gathering with friends and family are all experiences that depend on communication. Our goal is to get you "back on your feet" so you can enjoy the rest of your event to the fullest.
An Important Note:
These services are not a replacement for your regular hearing healthcare. Every SCAdian who receives help from our volunteers will be encouraged to schedule a follow-up appointment with their own hearing care provider once they return home. Our volunteers are here to address small, in-the-moment issues so you can get back to enjoying your event — your provider at home is the right person to take a deeper and more thorough look at your hearing aids.
A Note on State Licensure and Why It Shapes What We Can Do:
Audiologists and hearing instrument specialists are licensed professionals, and that licensure is issued on a state-by-state basis. A volunteer who holds a license in one state does not automatically hold a license in every state where an SCA event takes place. Because large SCA events draw participants — and volunteers — from across the country and even internationally, our volunteers may be attending an event in a state where they are not licensed to practice.
This is one of the key reasons our services are limited to basic maintenance and troubleshooting rather than clinical care. Activities like programming hearing aids, adjusting amplification settings, managing electronic feedback, or replacing components such as receivers and tubes are considered licensed clinical services in most states. Performing these services in a state where a volunteer does not hold an active license could place that volunteer in violation of state law — regardless of their qualifications or good intentions.
By contrast, the services we do offer — such as cleaning a hearing aid, swapping out a dead battery, replacing a clogged wax filter, or helping reconnect a Bluetooth pairing — are akin to the kind of basic upkeep and troubleshooting that any hearing aid user might do at home. These are practical, hands-on fixes for common small problems, not clinical interventions.
In short: our volunteers are happy to help you with the equivalent of "changing a lightbulb," but they cannot rewire the house — both because this is a volunteer service at a medieval event, and because licensure laws exist to protect you by ensuring that clinical-level hearing aid care is provided by a professional who is licensed and accountable in the state where the care is delivered.
A Note About Our Other Hearing Helper Volunteers:
Not every volunteer who helps with hearing aid services is a licensed audiologist or hearing instrument specialist — and that is perfectly okay. Some of our volunteers are hearing aid users themselves, or are family members and caregivers who have years of hands-on experience helping a loved one maintain their hearing aids at home.
These volunteers bring valuable practical knowledge. Someone who has spent years changing their own wax filters, swapping batteries, cleaning their devices each night, or helping a parent or spouse troubleshoot a Bluetooth connection knows their way around the day-to-day care of hearing aids. That kind of experience is exactly what is needed for the basic maintenance tasks we offer at events.
However, it is important to understand that these volunteers are not licensed hearing care professionals and do not hold clinical credentials. They will not attempt any service that falls into the clinical or licensed category. Their role is limited to the same kinds of basic upkeep tasks that any hearing aid user or family member might perform at home — cleaning, battery changes, wax filter swaps, and similar hands-on help.
Whether your hearing aid is looked at by a licensed professional or an experienced hearing aid user/caretaker, the same rule always applies: follow up with your own hearing care provider when you get home for a thorough check of your devices.
Services Our Volunteers May Be Able to Provide:
Depending on the supplies and equipment available, our volunteers may be able to help with:
Otoscopy — a quick look in your ear canals to check for impacted earwax
Cleaning your hearing aids and chargers
Wax guard/filter removal and replacement (availability depends on supplies on hand as well as the brand and model of your hearing aids)
Microphone cover replacement (availability depends on supplies on hand as well as the brand and model of your hearing aids)
Dome replacement (availability depends on supplies on hand as well as the brand and model of your hearing aids)
Battery replacement for devices using standard sizes (312, 13, 10, and 675)
Bluetooth connectivity — help pairing your hearing aids to your mobile phone
General troubleshooting of other technical issues, such as charging problems (our volunteers can help identify what may be causing the issue, though a full resolution may not always be possible on-site — for example, moisture in a charger may need time to dry)
Services NOT Currently Offered:
The following fall outside the scope of what our volunteers are able to provide at SCA events. Many of these are considered licensed clinical services and must be performed by a provider who holds an active license in the state where the care takes place:
Earwax (cerumen) removal from ear canals
Foreign body removal from ear canals (bugs, Q-tip fragments, etc.)
Receiver or tube replacement
Hearing aid programming or electronic feedback management
Repair of cracked or torn custom earmolds or custom hearing aids
Any and all cochlear implant services
Treatment for ear-related vertigo or dizziness (such as BPPV)
