If you've made it to this website, you very likely already know what the Society of Creative Anachronism is. But just in case you don't, click HERE to learn more!
The link opens a PDF of a Brochure created for SCA Court events to highlight some name signs created by our Deaf Populace as well as provide definitions of some common SCA English terms and what they mean. Being brand-new to the SCA can be overwhelming with the amount of information you're taking in, and can be even more challenging with a language barrier. This brochure is here to help Deaf visitors and prospective members follow along in Court when they see a Sign Herald, or a volunteer providing Signing Services, who usually express the auditory information spoken in court into a signed language (American Sign Language, for example) so that the Deaf audience can understand what kind of awards are being given out.
As of February 2025, SignHeraldsOfTheSCA.com is an official publication of the Sign Heralds of the Society of Creative Anachronism, with a special thank you to Bóaire Mathghamhain Ua Ruadháin for making it happen!

The largest annual SCA event held in late July/early August each year, lasting 17 days and ending on the second full weekend in August. The opening day of Pennsic can vary, starting as early as July 24th or as late as July 30th. Prior to 2007, Pennsic would fall entirely within the month of August.
Pennsic is considered to be the the largest reenactment event of its kind in the world, a pop-up medieval "city." It is a two-week event in Pennsylvania featuring a "war" between various kingdoms (usually between the East and the Midrealm with other kingdoms taking sides) while also hosting large-scale markets, feasts, tournaments, battles, classes, and competitions for arts and science.
Since Pennsic is the largest reenactment event of the SCA, it is also the largest in-person event where SCAdian Signers can congregate and use their signed language. 'Signers of the SCA' include Deaf SCAdians and newcomers, family members and friends of our Deaf population (CODA, etc), audiologists, teachers of the Deaf, sign language interpreters, students of sign language, and others that use or learn sign language on a regular basis. 'Volunteer Signers' are individuals from the SCA Signing Community that express auditory information into visual and/or tactile information at Court, in classes, and throughout SCA events.
For all Signers and those interested in sign language and history, there are several classes offered through Pennsic University (you can create an account and see updates to classes and meet-ups for all Pennsic activities that are not listed in the printed Pennsic Guide Book HERE) for both Peace Week and War Week. There are also several Sign Language Meet-Ups scheduled across Pennsic for both weeks that include shopping nights, coffee outings, painting hands with kids, and more.
